Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1–4 in the U.S.—but it's 100% preventable. Join us in taking the Water Safety Pledge and commit to using the National Drowning Prevention Alliance's 5 Layers of Protection to help keep kids safer around water. Every layer makes a difference—and every pledge counts.

Learn the 5 Layers of Protection
Protect what matters most—because no single safeguard is enough on its own.
Barriers & Alarms
Use four-sided fencing with self-closing, self-latching gates, pool safety covers, alarms, and drowning detection systems to prevent unsupervised access to water.
Water Competency
Equip children and adults with swimming and safety skills to protect themselves in all types of water environments.
Supervision
Ensure constant, capable supervision from a designated Water Watcher and a lifeguard whenever kids are in or around water.
Life Jackets
Use properly fitted, fastened, and U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets, especially in natural water like lakes, rivers, and oceans.
Emergency Preparation
Learn CPR with rescue breaths, have basic water rescue skills, keep a phone nearby, and know your location address to quickly call 911 in an emergency.
